Rich Man, Poor Man

Mexico's Carlos Slim is now considered the world's richest man. His net worth stands at 63 billion dollars (in the US a billion equals 1,000 million) and his wealth continues to grow at the rate of 2.7 million dollars per hour. It should be noted that Slim lives in a county where fifty-three percent of the population lives in poverty (less than $2 a day). Last March he announced that he would donate 10 billion dollars to charity in the next four years. Certainly his donations will provide much needed help for those less fortunate. Is Carlos Slim a rich man?

No man can tell whether he is rich or poor by turning to his ledger. It is the heart that makes a man rich. -Harriet Ward Beecher

Money can't buy back your youth when you're old
Or a friend when you're lonely
Or a love that's grown cold
The wealthiest person is a pauper at times
Compared to the man with a satisfied mind

 - J. H. "Red" Rhodes and Jack Hayes, Satisfied Mind. We've quoted the third verse of this traditional folk song.
