Gypsy Camp

Involuntarily, the author was in the Army. In Germany. There was a gypsy camp in the area. We were told that visiting the camp was strictly forbidden. Verboten. In the beginning I had no interest in the gypsy camp. But later I wondered, "Why the prohibition?" I wanted to see the camp. Quite casually I asked a sergeant for directions. Sensing my motives he shouted, "Don't even think about it."

I never did see the gypsies and regret not trying. What would have happened? Maybe had my fortune read? Or robbed of a few Deutsch Marks? Perhaps a gypsy girl and I would have ran away to France, to Spain, and lived as real gypsies. Probably nothing would have happened. You never know. Nunca sabes.
